The classical model of thin lithospheric plates moving over a global asthenosphere is shown to be implausible. Evidence is presented that appears to contradict continental drift, seafloor spreading and subduction, and the claim that the oceanic crust is relatively young. It is concluded that the fundamental tenets of plate tectonics might be wrong. Introduction The idea of large-scale continental drift has been around for some years, but the first detailed theory was proposed by Alfred Wegener in It met with widespread rejection, largely because the mechanism he suggested was inadequate — the continents supposedly plowed slowly through the denser oceanic crust under the influence of gravitational and rotational forces. Interest was revived in the early s with the rise of the new science of paleomagnetism, which seemed to provide strong support for continental drift. In the early s new data from ocean exploration led to the idea of seafloor spreading. Such interactions are believed to be responsible for most of the seismic and volcanic activity of the earth. Plates cause mountains to rise where they push together, and continents to fracture and oceans to form where they rift apart.

The Internet Journal of Neurosurgery. Abstract A steady series of advances in physics, mathematics, computers and clinical imaging science have progressively transformed diagnosis and treatment of neurological and neurosurgical disorders in the years between the discovery of the X-ray and the advent of high resolution diffusion based functional MRI. The story of the progress in human terms, with its battles for priorities, forgotten advances, competing claims, public battles for Nobel Prizes, and patent priority litigations bring alive the human drama of this remarkable collective achievement in computed medical imaging.
Background Atkinson Morley’s Hospital is a small Victorian era hospital building standing high on a hill top in Wimbledon, about 8 miles southwest of the original St. George’s Hospital building site in central London. On October 1, Godfrey Hounsfield and Jamie Ambrose positioned a patient inside a new machine in the basement of the hospital turned a switch and launched the era of modern neurosurgery and neuroimaging. Everything that neurosurgeons had learned about diagnosis and surgical planning before that first scan was totally transformed by that event.
What came together on that remarkable fall day, was a confluence of mathematics, science, invention, clinical medicine, and industrial resources that all arrived at that one time and place in a dramatic and powerful way.
Franglais et anglicismes: quand le français se met à parler anglais
Mauritshuis , The Hague Art historians have equated certain globular highlights of light-toned paint found in many of Vermeer’s paintings with circles of confusion that the artist presumably have observed through a camera obscura. It must be assumed that once Vermeer had understood how the disks of confusion are produced by the camera obscura and how to imitate them with paint, he employed them with considerable artistic license in order to enhance the effect of light as it plays upon natural surface.
Although Dutch painters experimented with a number of techniques to represent highlights , which are key to creating the illusion of light conditions usually intense , on shiny surface textures , only Vermeer adopted circular highlight in a methodical manner. Perhaps the only other instance in Dutch painting of such highlights are those on a pair of slippers in the foreground of Gabriel Metsu ‘s — Woman Reading a Letter, a picture that was likely inspired by Vermeer himself.

This is followed, inevitably, by statistics from Baghdad’s version of the county morgue. But those figures just strike me as utterly meaningless as a measure of “violent death” in Baghdad or Iraq pre-war. There was plenty of violent death to go around in Saddam’s Iraq that was kept off the books, as we know now hat tip, Instapundit. Would it be so difficult for reporters, who are trying to make a legitimate point about street crime, to simply throw in the contextualizing phrase “street crime” when they are discussing this issue, rather then the totalizing phrase “violent death” which just erases all the pain and suffering that was caused by the state as if it never happened?

After publishing his dissertation in , he published his groundbreaking incompleteness theorems in , on the basis of which he was granted his Habilitation in and a Privatdozentur at the University of Vienna in Among his mathematical achievements at the decade’s close is the proof of the consistency of both the Axiom of Choice and Cantor’s Continuum Hypothesis with the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms for set theory, obtained in and , respectively.
Other publications of the s include those on the decision problem for the predicate calculus, on the length of proofs, and on differential and projective geometry. All of these events were decisive in influencing his decision to leave Austria in , when he and his wife Adele emigrated to the United States. He would remain at the Institute until his retirement in The initial period of his subsequent lifelong involvement with philosophy was a fruitful one in terms of publications: The latter paper coincided with results on rotating universes in relativity he had obtained in , which were first published in an article entitled: Taken together, the two manuscripts are the fitting last words of someone who, in a fifty year involvement with mathematics and philosophy, pursued, or more precisely, sought the grounds for pursuing those two subjects under the single heading: These will be treated in the sequel to this entry.

This myth, however, allowed for divergent political interpretations, for, in view of the prevailing anti-Italian sentiments of these troubled times, the rebellious Paris Parlement no doubt associated Andromeda with the regent Queen-Mother, and the monster with her Italian prime minister, Cardinal Giulio Mazarini.

History of Technology Heroes and Villains – A little light reading Here you will find a brief history of technology. Initially inspired by the development of batteries, it covers technology in general and includes some interesting little known, or long forgotten, facts as well as a few myths about the development of technology, the science behind it, the context in which it occurred and the deeds of the many personalities, eccentrics and charlatans involved.
You may find the Search Engine , the Technology Timeline or the Hall of Fame quicker if you are looking for something or somebody in particular. Scroll down and see what treasures you can discover. Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind.
Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications. The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery.
Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations.
Oil on panel, 37 x National Gallery of Art, Washington D. Aerial perspective is a pictorial convention that enables the painter to create a forceful illusion of distance in a landscape by using paler colors sometimes tinged with blue , less pronounced tonal variation and vaguer forms to define those objects that are farthest from the viewer, especially near the horizon.
The painterly technique replicates a natural phenomena that depends on the quantity of moisture in the air between the viewer and the objects. In order to enhance the effect of aerial perspective, painters depicted foreground objects with sharp outlines, brilliant or warm colors that contrast with those reserved for the background.
Aerial perspective had been firmly established as a mimetic device by the fifteenth century, and explanations of its effects were written by polymaths such as Leon Battista Alberti — and Leonardo da Vinci —

Translations[ edit ] English translations of “Doklady” articles began again in , when the American Institute of Physics began publishing Soviet Physics – Doklady.
Other publications soon followed and within a few years most Doklady subject sections were available in English translation. The online translation journals now only publish “selected” articles from the original Russian language journal, which is also available online from One approach is to check the Russian Doklady issue contents page to identify the subject section and then determine in which translation journal the article was published.
We present desiderata and suggestions as well as methods from computational linguistics to systematically apply variety corpora for the enrichment, i. Examples are those variant dictionaries developed by Ammon et al. On the one hand, we conducted a systematic frequency analysis in newspaper variety corpora for approved lists of South Tyrolean special vocabulary in order to possibly refine corresponding dictionary entries with corpus evidence.
On the other hand, we filtered the list of words of our South Tyrolean corpus which could not be lemmatised by a tool developed for the variety in Germany.

Manship , Paul Howard Manship considered it a good omen that he was the seventh child of a seventh daughter. He began to draw in emulation of his sister Adeline , but it was particularly his brother Luther who served as an example. Luther earned his living as an engraver though his main interest was painting.
His initial decision to pursue a career as a sculptor was largely motivated by his color blindness; he had started out life as a painter. For a painter color blindness is obviously a severe handicap, but for a sculptor it might prove an advantage: Indeed, a great sensitivity to form, to contour, and to line was to prove one of Manship’s major strengths. By the age of nineteen, Paul Manship had saved enough from his work as a freelance illustrator and designer to head for New York City where he immediately enrolled at the Art Students League.
