Reply to this comment Just looked at his profile and surprised to see he and I have mutual friends. He looks like he is doing a little better now than back in December and has started a new job in Albuquerque. All he can do is work at being better. Unfortunately this will be a lifetime of work and pain he may never see relief from. I had a brother who suffered bipolar disorder and started self medicating as a teenager.
He was an incredibly intelligent person who made the wrong choices. His addiction and suffering tormented and destroyed my mom who ended up having to bury her first born her pain caused her to take it out on me her youngest being the only one left in the house. Drug Addiction Hotline Initial Introduction to the Drug Many Oxycontin addicts are initially introduced to the drug when their doctor prescribes it for pain relief. They find ways to get the medicine after their course of treatment although they no longer need it for pain. Other addicts first obtain the drug through illegal routes because they desire its pleasurable effects or to boost the effects of other drugs. Understanding Oxycontin Abuse and Addiction Addiction to Oxycontin is not common for people who take the drug as prescribed by a doctor, according to a New England Journal of Medicine review.
However, like other opioids, the drug is highly addictive when misused in unintended ways. Many people start misusing the potent opioid because they are seduced by the sedative effects or the high or euphoria the drug gives them. It is the prolonged abuse of bigger and more frequent doses than normal that transitions and entraps the Oxycontin abuser into a state of addiction. It contains a larger amount of oxycodone; thus, it can give a bigger initial “rush” when misused.
This is one of the appeals to to many Oxycontin addicts. When the opioid abuser chews the pill before swallowing, crushes and snorts it, or dissolves and injects it, the oxycodone is rapidly released and gives an immediate big “hit. These routes of abuse increase the great danger of accidental overdose , respiratory arrest, and death. Users who are also abusing other substances, including alcohol and benzodiazepines such as clonazepam , are at the greatest risk of dying.
The addiction to Oxycontin occurs because opioids cause changes in nerve cells and chemical transmitters in certain areas of the brain. These effects start from the initial use of the drug.

Some even expressed disdain for people whose opioid use had led to addiction. Attitudes toward those who take medicines as prescribed for pain have not yet become a topic for academic research. Law enforcement and public health campaigns to stop diversion of prescription medicines may reinforce this association.
She has learned to get off her prescriptions and endure the pain when facing work-related drug testing. Hurstak, an internist and addiction-medicine specialist affiliated with the University of California-San Francisco, interviewed doctors and, separately, their patients who were on pain medicine and had histories of substance use. Her findings appear in a paper published this year in the journal Substance Abuse. Sometimes the same conversations are interpreted differently by doctors and patients.
So a doctor might limit a prescription out of concern the drugs might be shared, sold, or stolen. Yet patients, she found, are thinking about their own behaviors and use of medications. Still, researchers have generally found that less than 8 percent of patients prescribed opioids go on to develop a substance-use disorder.

Users who have been on the drug for years are likely to have a more prolonged withdrawal experience than those who have not.
However, even those who have been using it for only a few weeks or months may experience withdrawal. Just like the severity of the symptoms varies from person to person, so does the time span of withdrawal. Depending on the dose, Oxycodone has a relatively long half-life, lasting up to 12 hours. The withdrawal symptoms start to surface right after the drug has left the bloodstream, causing the user to experience the first signs of the grueling withdrawal process.
